A description is given of a workpiece-spindle drive for a numerically controlled lathe having a multi-staged gear mechanism which has at least one gear-mechanism stage, adjustable without play and is driven by a position-controllable motor (4) in order to position the workpiece spindle (1) precisely or to drive it at the feed rate.
