A friction clutch comprises a cover plate (1) having a base portion (8) joined to a skirt portion (7), together with a pressure plate (2) and a diaphragm (5). The cover plate (1) has a first shoulder (21) which is directed towards the base portion (8), while the pressure plate (2) has at its outer periphery a second shoulder (22) directed away from the base portion (8) but being closer axially to the latter than the first shoulder (21), the first and second shoulders (21, 22) being arranged for a resilient compensating means (20) to be fitted between them and in engagement with them. The compensating means (20) biasses the pressure plate (2) towards the base portion (8) of the cover plate, in such a way as to oppose the increase of load of the diaphragm (5) that may arise in service. The means (20) may be a diaphragm or a Belleville ring and may have resilient outer lugs. A ventilating slot in the portion (7) may allow the cover securing flange (6) to form one shoulder and, in an alternative modification, the friction surface (23) forms a shoulder.
