A recording apparatus comprises a recording head (10) moved in a predetermined direction in relative to a recording medium; a shaft member (213) extended in the predetermined direction for rotatably supporting a carriage (201) on which the recording head (10) is mounted and for guiding movement of the recording head (10) in the predetermined direction; a support member (613) extended in the predetermined direction for supporting the carriage (201) in cooperation with the shaft member (213); and means for changing a distance between the recording head (10) and the recording medium by changing a height of the carriage (201), the height being measured from the supporting member (613). In the case that the recording medium is made of materials, for example, having a poor property in absorbing ink, it will be appreciated that the operator can adjust the distance between the recording head (10) and the recording medium to be large enough by using the above mentioned mechanism so that the recording medium waved due to ink absorption may not rub against the recording head (10). <IMAGE>
