The invention relates to an apparatus for inspecting the peripheral surfaces of nuclear fuel pellets (1), comprising a handling assembly (2), capable of aligning the pellets and turning them about their axes, an imaging device (3), an evaluation device (4) capable of analysing the data output by the imaging device and a sorting assembly (5) slaved to the evaluation device so as to separate the pellets whose peripheral surface is defective, using actuators (15) acting on sorting elements (14).
