A scalp moisturiser or external preparation for the skin, containing the following as essential active ingredients: 0.0005 - 90% by weight of the total of (a) steroid glycoside and/or triterpenoid glycoside and of (b) sphingoglycolipid, the ratio (a) to (b) by weight being within the range 90:10 - 10:90. Steroid hormones, sebum secretion inhibitors and/or antibacterial agents having potential activity with respect to the microbe Pityrosporum ovale may also be incorporated together with the essential active ingredients mentioned above. <IMAGE>
