The invention relates to a stairway of variable inclination and to a method for constructing a stairway of this type. The stairway comprises two strings (2), each consisting of two uprights (3, 4) which are displaceable parallel to one another, and of steps (5) which are joined to the said uprights by way of journals (6). These journals are mounted on the inner faces (3A, 4A) of the two uprights and are provided, at their end projecting from the uprights, with a recess (6A); the lateral edges (5A) of each step have a first circular hole (5B) and a second oblong hole (5C), in which holes the journals (6) engage, and the minimal spacing of which holes corresponds to that of the journals. At least one pin (10) is mounted extending from a longitudinal edge (5D1) of the steps, passing through at least the recess (6A) of the corresponding journal (6) engaged in the oblong hole (5C). <IMAGE>
