The isokinetic ergometer has force application points, each mechanically coupled to a piston (5), displaced within an hydraulic cylinder (4). The cylinder is connected in series with a variable flow regulating valve (6) for providing a required resistance. Pref. the ergometer has a pair of oars, each coupled to the piston rod (14) via a gear wheel (27) and a cooperating toothed rack. The series flow regulating valve pref. has a bypass circuit (8) containing a non-return valve (9). This allows a pressure reservoir (11) receiving the displaced hydraulic fluid to be coupled directly to the hydraulic cylinder (14) for returning the hydraulic fluid.
