Quantity of a liq., to be supplied to the evaporator of a continuous vacuum still, is pretreated by admission to a pre-chamber which is sealed and the temp. and/or pressure is controlled to remove volatile components from the liq., at least some of the residual liquid being transferred to the evaporator prior to repeating the process with a further quantity of the liquid.
