A fuel conditioning device (10; 60) to be installed in a fuel supply line for an internal combustion engine contains one or more tin alloy bodies (40; 70, 76, 82) just fitting within a cylindrical mild steel housing (12; 62) and separated from an anisotropic ferrite block permanent magnet (50; 88) by a steel fuel distributor plate (90). The alloy bodies are characterised by a cross section including a mutually perpendicular backbone (42) and central fin (44) both extending diametrically across the housing, and shorter fins (46) parallel to the central fin. Steel baffle plates (74, 80) separate adjacent alloy bodies which may be rotationally staggered. The magnet has pole faces (52, 54; 98) directed outwardly towards the ferromagnetic steel sides of the housing across spaces (56; 96) which form substantially the entire fuel flow path past the magnet; and apertures (94) in the distributor plate ensure that the fuel is ducted into that path after washing across the tin alloy, which is shielded from the magnet's field by the ferromagnetic distributor plate. A spring (59; 100) and lugs (92) on the distributor plate hold the components together within the housing. |
