An open-top, heat resistant container (10), such as a molten metal ladle, having a block (30) rigidly attached to the ladle (10) and partly submerged into the surface (22) of the molten metal (20) in the container or ladle (10) for reducing a major portion of the exposed surface (22) of the molten metal (20) in the container (10). The block (30) may be vertically adjustable for varying the amount of immersion into the molten metal (20) when a predetermined amount of molten metal retained in the container (10) has been reached by flow over a weir edge (13) of the container or ladle (10). A fraction of a centimeter difference in the level of molten metal (20) in the container (10), multiplied by the exposed area (22) of the molten metal (20) in the container (10) can amount to a kilogram difference in the molten metal (20) measured by the tilt and weir (13) of the container or ladle (10). Thus, the less exposed area of the surface in the container (10), the more repeatable the measured amount of molten metal (20) can be poured from the container (10). The ladle (10) is mechanically moveable from immersion in a tank (T) of molten metal (20) to a position above the tank (T) for overflow of molten metal (20) over the weir edge (13) and/or tilting of the container (10) to a predetermined angle to retain a measured amount of molten metal (20), and lastly pouring that measured amount into a mold, then starting the cycle over again.
|
