The chassis is for a motor vehicle or for a motor vehicle trailer and has two longitudinal side members. Each side member has a recess (9) to receive the wheel axle (8) and is constructed from two beams (3,4) joined end to end by bolts (10) which are fitted in overlapping lugs. - The joint between the two beams is positioned so that it is directly above the recess for the axis. The brackets for supporting the axle (8) are attached to the chassis in the region of the joint by means of bolts fitted in holes in the end of each beam (3,4).
