In polyethylene prodn. using a diphenylethane deriv. as C-C labile polymerisation initiator, the novelty is that polymerisation is carried out in the presence of up to 40 mole diphenylethane deriv. of formula (I),w here R1-6 = H, linear or branched alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl, substd. alkyl, substd. aryl, -CN, -COOH, ester, acid nitrile, alkoxy, 1-4C alkylsilyloxy, arylsilyloxy or halogen, in which each alkyl can contain 1-10C; and up to 40 mole organic peroxide, O2 or azo cpd. per 1000000 mole C2H4 and at 60000-35000 kPa and 130-400 deg.C..
