Dyeing and printing with reactive, direct, acid, water-soluble sulphur or pigment dyestuffs is carried out in the absence of alkali by pretreating the textile with a wetting agent (I) and opt. quaternised reaction prod. (II) of polyethyleneimine (III) with a bifunctional alkylating agent (IV), then dyeing by the usual methods with reactive dyestuffs, but without addn. of alkali, and finishing by rinsing and drying. Pref. warp yarn is pretreated with (I) and (II) and size in a sizing bath. After dyeing or printing, the textile is washed with a detergent contg. a perborage and opt. a perborate activator and optical whitener.
