The passive integrated directional optical coupler uses two strip waveguides (WL1, WL2) of defined width (b) applied to a semiconductor substrate. A narrow spacing between the waveguides (WL1, WL2) over a coupling range (K) allows waves propagated along one waveguide (WL1, WL2) to be transferred to the other waveguide (WL2, WL1). The width (b) of one strip waveguide (WL1, WL2) is defined by a rib provided by a thickened section of a deposited semiconductor substrate is made of InP with the waveguide layer of InGaAsP.
