The terminal insulators in an electrostate dust filter, used esp. for removing carbon from diesel-engine exhaust fumes, e.g. by agglomerating into large particles for subsequent cydone removed themselves acquire a coating of the combustible and electrically conductive particles. The insulators are cleared of this by combustion, using heat developed by a pulsating DC arc. pulsation frequency is at least 5 kHz, and their amplitude is of the order of 1/3 the meer voltage value of the DC. Pulsations may have broad frequency spectrum and include harmonics.
