<p>New catalyst compsns. are prepd. by reacting (A) a compsn. based on (a) a component contg. a Gp. VIII metal, (b) a dentate ligand component which can form a complex with (a) through gps. contg. P, N and/or S, and (c) an acid component, with (B) a clay contg. exchangeable cations. (B) An acid clay is pref. used esp of the smectite or montmorillonite type, partic. with exchangeable Na or Al cations. (A) (a) The metal is Pd, pref. as a salt with an organic acid. (b) The dentate gps. contain P, and the ligand is a mono-dentate ligand of formula (R1R2P-R-PR+3R4R5)(X-) of a bidentate ligand of formula R1R2P-R-PR3R4. The amt. of mono-dentate ligand is 1-4 (1.5-3) mols/g-atom of Gp. VIII metal, and of bi-dentate ligand is 0.5-2 (0.75-1.5) mols.g-atom of Gp. VIII metal. Pref. (b) are (1-diphenylphosphino),2-(benzyldiphenylphosphonium)ethane tetrafluoroborate, and 1,3-bis(bis-(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphino)propane (I). In formula R1-R5= hydrocarbon gps., opt. with polar substits. (R1-R4 pref. = Ph, opt. with polar substits.); R= divalent bridging gp. with at least 2C in the bridge linking the P atoms; X= anion of an acid. (c) The acid has pKa below 2, or is an anion derived from this. The compsn. (A) contains 1-100 (2-50) mols of (c)/g-atom of Gp. VIII metal. (d) The catalayst may contain a 1,4-quinone, e.g. 1,4-benzoquinone or 1,4-naphthoquinone, in amt. of 5-5000 (10-1000) mols/g-atom of Gp. VIII metal.</p> |
