The mechanism comprises a screw (18, 21) mounted on a frame (2) so as to be linked axially, but not angularly, to this frame, and a nut (5) or worm wheel (20) capable of interacting with the screw, applicable in particular to the adjustment of the longitudinal position of a vehicle seat, the frame in question then being the upper profile of a rail supporting this seat. At least one of the two ends of the screw terminates in a conical end piece (9, 22) capable of interacting with a complementary conical recess (11, 23) formed in a threaded insert (12, 24) itself capable of interacting by screwing with a complementary threaded bore (13, 25) included in the frame (2) of the mechanism. <IMAGE>
