The item of furniture with expandable surfaces comprises a top which conceals individual supplements which are capable of emerging as far as a working position coinciding with the work surface of the top. The horizontal displacement of each one of the supplements until it exceeds the limits of the top is achieved, in a known manner, by means of manual pushing thereof, guided via rails arranged under the top. Upward vertical displacement is achieved when the supplement has passed beyond the limits of the top and automatic elevation means give rise to the ascent of each supplement in an independent manner. Downward vertical displacement of each supplement is achieved by starting from the fully-emerged position, by means of a slight manual pressure exerted thereon until the thickness of the top is taken up, so that recovery members act, forcing horizontal displacement of each supplement until they return to their original position under the top. <IMAGE>
