PURPOSE:To improve the selectivity and yield of the title substance by employing active china clay or a lamellar compound exchanged with prescribed ions, when an alpha-alkylnaphthalene not having substituent at at least one beta-posi tion is isomerized under a liquid phase condition to produce the subject sub stance. CONSTITUTION:When alpha-alkylnaphthalene not having substituent at at least one beta position and having CH3, C2H5, isopropyl or cyclohexyl group (e.g. 1,6- dimethylnaphthalene) at least one alpha-position is isomerized under a liquid phase condition to produce the subject substance (e.g. 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene), active china clay or a lamellar compound (e.g. montmorillonite or taeniolite) exchanged with exchangeable ions selected from protons, Al, Fe, etc., or multi-nuclear hydroxyl ions selected from Al, Zr, Fe and Cr is employed as the catalyst. |
