Method for forming polythiophosphazene macromolecules

The synthesis of the first examples of a new class of inorganic macromolecules, the polythiophosphazenes, is reported. When heated at 90 DEG C., the cyclothiophosphazene N3P2SCl5 undergoes ring-opening polymerization to yield the high polymeric polythiophosphazene [N3P2SCl5]n. The latter functions as a reactive macromolecular intermediate and undergoes halogen replacement with sodium phenoxide and sodium o-phenylphenoxide to afford the polymers [N3P2S(OPh)5]n and [N3P2S(OC6H4Ph-o)3.25Cl1.75]n, respectively.
