Process for the preparation of &beta-hydroxyamino acids

This invention relates to a process for the preparation of β-hydroxy-α-amino acids which are obtained by the condensation of aldehydes with glycine catalysed by serine hydroxymethyl transferase. The predominant product with the majority of aldehydes is the L-erythro diastereoisomer. For example, the methyl ester of succinic semialdehyde is condensed with glycine in the process to provide the monomethyl ester of L-erythro- α-amino-β-hydroxy adipic acid.
