PURPOSE:To produce the subject lactic acid useful as optically active pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high efficiency directly in an improved yield from any kind of raw materials by treating DL-lactonitrile with a specific microorganism in a polar solvent. CONSTITUTION:The objective lactic acid is produced by treating DL-lactonitrile with a microorganism or treated microorganism belonging to genus Enterobacter, Arthrobacter, Caseobacter, Brevibacterium, Aureobacterium, Escherichia, Micrococcus, Streptomyces, Flavobacterium, Aeromonas, Nocardia, etc., and capable of stereo-selectively hydrolyzing the nitrile group of D-L-lactonitrile (e.g. Enterobacter sp.SK12 FERM P-11299) in a polar solvent. |
