The present invention relates to novel thimine derivatives of formula (I), the epimers and anomers thereof, wherein A represents a substituted 1-hexopyranosyl ring, which carries a substituent being not suitable for forming phosphate esters instead of at least one of the hydroxy groups being in position 2, 3 and 6, and at least one of the hydroxy group is protected with a protecting group. The compounds of formula (I) which are free of protecting groups, are useful against retrovirus (HIV) therefore they can be used for the treatment of AIDS.
