PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound specified in a content of hydroxybenzofuran which is an impurity by subjecting phenylhydroxyquinone obtained by dehydrogenating cyclohexylhydroquinone in the presence of a catalyst under heating to separation by distillation. CONSTITUTION:Cyclohexylhydroquinone is dehydrogenated by bringing cyclohexylhydroquinone into contact with a catalyst of such as a metal of platinum group at 200-400 deg.C for 10mm sec to several 10min and then subjected to separation by distillation at <=300 deg.C and <=100mmHg pressure or subjected to purification by recrystallization with a compound selected from an aromatic hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, alcohol, ether, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid, etc., or industrially advantageously purified by combination of the both methods to provide the aimed phenylhydroquinone useful as a raw material for polyester, especially an aromatic polyester being <=0.1wt.%, preferably 0.05wt.% in content of hydroxybenzofuran which is an impurity. |
