Process for marking articles made of transparent organic material, characterised in that, within the said article, especially at the periphery of a contact lens, outside the useful region thereof, local modifications are produced in the refractive index of a cured polymer of which it consists, following patterns of the desired shape, by impregnating the polymer with a photopolymerisable composition comprising a monomer and a photoinitiator for polymerisation under irradiation, locally modulated irradiation of the polymer thus impregnated, and removal of the excess nonphotopolymerised composition remaining especially in the regions which have not been irradiated.
