PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance useful as a production intermediate for optically active D-(-)-pantolactone on an industrial scale with decreased bromine consumption by oxidizing pantolactone with bromine in an organic solvent in the presence of a specific substance such as iodine. CONSTITUTION:The objective substance can be produced by oxidizing pantolactone with bromine in an organic solvent (preferably carbon tetrachloride or benzene) in the presence of one or more substances selected from iodine, inorganic acid (e.g. concentrated sulfuric acid), organic acid (e.g. glacial acetic acid), alkali metal salt (e.g. lithium chloride), alkaline-earth metal salt (e.g. magnesium chloride) and zinc oxide. |
