Appts. has two counter-rotating rollers of which one has impressions in pref. pattern, and the other is covered with an elastic compressible coating. The gap between the axes of the two rollers is smaller than the sum of radii, and a feeder passes the metal foil between them. The resilient covering is pref. rubber material. Pref. counter-rotating rollers (1, 2) have one (e.g. 1) with embossed pattern (11) which is the negative of that required. The other roller (2) has the covering of compressible material which therefore can sink into the embossed grooves. The films (3) or foils etc. are passed between the rollers. Parallel concave grooves run across the roller (1) and are crossed at e.g. 45 deg. by a second gp. of parallel grooves to form the pattern. Embossed foil withstands tension.
