The ice breaker vessel has a hull (10) with different shapes at different levels. Its bow part has a wider leading edge (11) at the ice breaking level, to form a parallel-side channel (B), when travelling forwards. The hull can also be trimmed by e.g. pumping water from end to end. Thus an enlarged hull stern (5) of bulbous shape forms a channel (B1) which is wider than the front channel, when following a curve. The channel widening effect can be increased by using a heavy duty rudder behind the propellers so that the stern can be swung sideways, breaking up the ice along the edge of the already formed curved channel.
