A functionally reactive emulsion polymer is produced by copolymerising ethylenically unsatd. monomers including carboxyl or hydroxyl functional monomers but excluding amine monomers in an aqs. polymer medium in the presence of surfactants and initiators, The polymer is treated with an ion exchange resin to remove cations to produce a pH of less than 2.5. The resulting polymer can be crosslinked with glycoluril. The glycluril is mixed with the emulsion before ion exchange, or can be treated separately with an ion exchange resin. The ion exchange resin is a protonated cation exchange resin. The monomers are acrylic monomers, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride with hydroxy, carboxyl, amido or methylolamido functional monomers, e.g. 2-20% of a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or inertacrylate. The glycolaril is methylolated, e.g. dihydroxy dimethylol ethylene urea. The coating compsn. comprises 20-95 wt. % emulsion polymer and 5-80% glycoluril.
