Appts. for surface hardening workpiece with curved surfaces by induction heating consists of a workpiece clamp (8) which can rotate about axis (3) via drive (6), a moving table (11) which is fitted with a small surface inducer (17) such that the inducer can be moved in two mutually perpendicular directions, in plane (15) perpendicular to axis (3) and a control device (20) which coordinates the movement of the three motors (6, 12, 13). The control (20) includes a phase positioning device (22) for the inducer (17) which stores information relating to the thermal conductivity over area of the workpiece and response to the workpiece rotational position adjust the spacing (31) between inducer and workpiece surface. USE/ADVANTAGE - Automatically adjusts the spacing (31) such that it is greater in the areas where thermal conducting is low and vice versa thereby ensuring homogeneous hardening. Esp. for eccentric workpieces such as cam shaft.
