Coating engine blocks with heat-resistant protective paint - by degreasing sand blasting, applying and drying primer, applying and drying top coat, and post-curing with heat from engine

Process comprises (a) degreasing the block, (b) sand blasting, (c) applying a layer of primer, (d) drying for at least 4 hrs., (e) applying a topcoat, (f) drying for a specific time, esp. 8-12 hrs., (g) post-curing the primer and topcoat by heating and (h) post-curing by using the heat produced by the engine when running. All openings are sealed, pref. with a silicone sealant, before sandblasting, pref. with sand of grain dia. 0.25-0.8mm. The primer is based on epoxy resin, pref. a multi-component paint contg. epoxy resin and amide, with hardener. The topcoat is an acrylic or synthetic resin paint, pref. a multicomponent paint based on polyurethane and acrylic, with hardener. Primer and topcoat are sprayed on in several layers, with drying phases, using a spray pressure of 4-5 bar, and the topcoat is a dark-coloured, pref. black paint. Alternatively, the topcoat is a 1-coat metallic paint, or a 2-coat metallic paint with a first clearcoat. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process enables engine blocks to be coated with heat-resistant protective paint; final hardening is achieved by using heat from the engine, so that a large drying oven is not required.
