Oxidn.-resistant mutant (I) of beta-interferon (BINF) has nearly the same biological activity as BINF but has each Met residue which is susceptible to chloramine T or peroxide oxidn. (but not Met residues subject to such oxidn.) replaced by amino acid residues which do not adversely affect activity. Also new are (1) recombinant DNA sequences coding for (I); (2) expression vectors contg. this DNA and (3) host cells transformed with such vectors. Oxidisable Met are replaced by Gly, Ala, Ser, Thr, Val, Ile, Lev, Asn, Glu, Gln, Tyr, or Phe. Specifically claimed (I) have 62-Met replaced by Ala, Leu or Val, and opt. also 17- Cys replaced by Ser.
