A refractory slide-gate portion of a sliding gate valve system for a vessel dispensing molten material comprises a metal supporting container or can (12) filled with a low-fired coherent chemical bonded refractory (14). The refractory is formed into a coherent refractory body within the metal supporting can by applying pressure thereto and becomes directly affixed thereto, without the use of refractory mortar. An orifice through the refractory forms the means of controlling the flow of molten material.
