The use of TGF- beta and TGF- beta antagonists to modulate blood pressure is described. In a specific embodiment described by way of example herein, recombinant mature TGF- beta 1 isolated and purified from transfected Chinese Hamster Ovary cells induced rapid, significant and sustained decreases in arterial blood pressure of cynomolgus monkeys receiving daily injections of the rTGF- beta 1. The TGF- beta used to lower blood pressure may be obtained from native sources or may be produced by recombinant DNA or chemical synthetic techniques.
