A permanent magnet (4) suitable for use in a wire print head is formed of plural split segments. Each split segment is formed by controlling the direction of a magnetic field, which is induced to have magnetic domains aligned in a direction of easy magnetization, and a punching direction at a right angle relative to each other. The split segments are combined together into an annular configuration. The permanent magnet (4) so formed is attached to a base (3), followed by the assembly of a base plate (5) and cores (12) to form a magnet assembly. The base plate (5) and the cores (12) are then surface-finished in flush relative to each other.
