A work station includes interfacing means for transferring data between an internal bus which interconnects components like system memory and a central processing unit, and an external bus communicating with input/output devices and having different operating characteristics compared with the internal bus. The interfacing means includes a buffer (70) comprising a plurality of data storage locations (e.g. DOL), write control means (83) arranged to cause data words received from the external bus to be written into selected ones of the storage locations, and read control means (85) arranged to cause the contents of those storage locations containing said data words to be read out in a predetermined sequence.
