PURPOSE:To produce lactones on an industrial scale at a low cost while efficiently utilizing the solvent and catalyst by hydrogenating a dicarboxylic acid in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst containing Rh and an organic phosphine, and treating the liquid phase using a specific method. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid, dicarboxylic acid anhydride and/or dicarboxylic acid ester is reacted with hydrogen in a hydrogenation reaction zone in liquid phase using a solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium and an organic phosphine. The liquid phase is recovered from the hydrogenation reaction zone and distilled in a 1st distillation column to obtain the 1st distillate and the 1st residue. The 1st residue is recycled to the hydrogenation reaction zone and, at the same time, a part of the 1st residue is distilled in a 2nd distillation column to obtain the 2nd distillate and the 2nd residue. The 2nd distillate is circulated to the hydrogenation reaction zone or the 1st distillation column and the objective lactones are separated from the 1st distillate. |
