The reed valve assembly is intended for a reciprocating piston compressor. It comprises a valve seat plate, arranged between a seal ring (2) on the cylinder block and the cylinder head and has inlet (18) and outlet (17) ports. One end (11) of the inlet valve (8) is riveted (14) to the plate via a washer strip (13) radially outward of the cylinder bore (9). The other end (7) of this valve extends outside the bore (9) into a recess (10) in the ring (2). The portion (11) lies within another recess (12) in the ring. The rivet heads (14) are clear of the top face of the cylinder block.
