Automatic air pressure regulator - has membrane push rod and piston governor

The system avoids the usual wide on/off margin of pressure regulators as presently used on pneumatic braking systems. A membrane (8) which forms the roof of a pressure chamber (10) expands upwards when the pressure of air from a compressor reaches a certain limit. A spring-loaded rod (12) follows the membrane and subsequently closes valve (18,19). A further increase of pressure separates the membrane from the rod seating and opens a by-pass through the hollow rod (12) into the outlet (4) via a chamber (13) which puts the system into the idling mode. Rising pressure in this chamber pushes a piston (14) against an adjustable spring (17). Decreasing pressure causes the membrane to retract thereby closing a valve (8,11) and opening another valve (18,19) thus putting the device into the pressure mode.
