The present invention relates to a method for mechanically separating washing using a device having at least two endless conveyor belts. According to the invention, a pile of washing is placed on a part of one of the conveyor belts 2, 3 which slopes gently upwards and the pile is conveyed upwards in the device between the two conveyor belts to a level which is at a substantial distance from the lower part of the device. The pile of washing is allowed to fall freely from this high level, with a powerful jet of air being directed essentially perpendicularly to the pile during its fall downwards such that a corner of an article contained in the pile is blown free, with this corner being caught by a catching device which pulls the article free from the pile.
