The invention relates to a signalling system, complementary to the visual signalling in force, allowing automatic reading of this signalling by a reader incorporated within each vehicle. This signalling is incorporated within the roadway, so that the information corresponding to each signal is encoded in the form of barcodes, arranged transversely over the entire width of the carriageway (1), so that it can be read when it is passed over by vehicles provided, on their chassis, with the system (2) for reading these codes, independently of the transverse position in which they pass over. This bar-coded signalling is structured in the form of expressions representing semantics, associated with each signal, allowing suitable processing - information and/or automatic action - of each expression read, by a system for processing the information which is on-board the vehicle (3) and connected to the barcode reader. This system is particularly applicable to road traffic and to industrial and airport vehicles. <IMAGE>
