The batt portion of a papermaking press felt contains at least two different kinds of fibres, one kind being in the surface layer, and being much finer than other kinds and being removed during service of the felt, e.g., during running in. Dia. of the fine fibres is 0.01 mm or less, and specifically their abrasion resistance is low, or they are degradable chemically or by heat. Surface fibres are pref. polyester and remainder are polyamide.
