Process for adsorption or chemical absorption of gaseous substances from a raw gas stream by addition of dry adsorbent material, or if appropriate chemically reacting absorbent, where the raw gas stream and the clean adsorbent, etc. are fed into a multiple compartmented bag filter installation, in which from 20 to 80 parts of the total input adsorbent is recycled and part of the gas within the filter housing is circulated by means of a mixing tube in which it is also contacted by separated cleaned adsorbent which is sprayed into the housing, and which is novel in that the fabric bag filter compartments are arranged so that the unit can be kept operational while one compartment is taken off-line for cleaning by ensuring that at least one other compartment remains on-line.
