Plate assemblies (10, 20) for lead-acid batteries (100) according to the present invention comprise a plurality of positive and negative electrode plates (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) which are alternately interspaced, and a plurality of separators (3) sandwiched in between each pair of said positive and negative electrode plates (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b). The knack of this invention lies in the electrode plate construction. Namely, one of the plurality of positive and negative electrode plates (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) is provided with a lug on both sides of the top edge thereof, while the other of these electrode plates (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) is provided only one lug around the center of the top edge thereof. With this particlar electrode plate construction, the distance, which is closely related to internal resistance of the electrode, between each lug and the remotest point on the plate is remarkably shortened. Thanks to such shortened distance, internal resistance of each of the electrode plates (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) becomes sufficiently small to minimize voltage drop and to ensure a remarkable improvement in charge and discharge characteristics of the lead-acid battery (100). |
