PURPOSE:To manufacture the optical fiber coupler which has extremely small temperature dependency of optical characteristics by superposing cut surfaces formed by removing parts of the clads of optical fibers, and welding the contact parts with laser light and forming a fusion splicing part. CONSTITUTION:The two fibers 14 whose jackets 15 are removed partially are fitted on fiber clamps 16 and 16. Then the clads 13 of the arcuate tip parts of the fibers 14 are irradiated with the laser light 21a from a laser 20, vaporized, and removed. Then the two fiber clamps 16 and 16 are moved to each other to bring the cut faces 24 and 24 of the two fibers 14 and 14 into contact with each other, and the cut faces 24 and 24 are irradiated with the laser light 21b and welded together. Consequently, when the two fibers 14 and 14 are joined together, not an adhesive, but the high-output laser light is used to remove parts of the clads 13 and connect the fibers 14 and 14 by fusion splicing, so the degree of variation of optical characteristics with temperature can be made small and the coupler which has extremely small temperature dependency is obtained. |
