A method for the analysis and isolation of genes which express membrane receptors is disclosed, which method is essentially based on the binding of bacterial colonies to specific ligands upon replication on a filter. Cells of E. coli transformed with proper vectors derived from phages or plasmids, containing the cDNA coding for human beta -adrenergic receptors, are grown on slabs of LB/agar. The bacterial colonies, once transferred onto nitrocellulose filters, exhibit specific binding to (<1><2><5>I)-iodocyanopindolol (ICYP). The beta -adrenergic receptors expressed in bacteria retain their pharmacological characteristics after being transferred onto filters.
