Heteroatom containing Rf-neopentyl compounds having formula III or IV <IMAGE> (III) <IMAGE> (IV) wherein Rf is a straight chain perfluoroalkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, E is branched or straight chain alkylene of 2 to 10 carbon atoms or said alkylene interrupted by one to three groups selected from the group consisting of -NR-, -S-, -COO-, -OOC-, SO2-, -CONR-, -NRCO-, -SO2NR-, and -NRSO2-, or terminated at the Rf end with -CONR- or -SO2NR-, where Rf is attached to the carbon or sulfur atom, or Rf is trifluoroethylene, and for formula III, X is -S-, -SO2-, or -NR-, or for formula IV, X is -CONR-, or -SO2NR-, or a direct bond where Rf is attached to the carbon or sulfur atom, and where R is independently hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or hydroxyalkyl of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and one or both of T1 and T2 is the residue of a mercapto mono- or dicarboxylic acid of 2 to 4 carbon atoms after removal of the hydrogen from the mercapto group and the other of T1 and T2 is hydroxyl.
