PURPOSE:To obtain the passive mode separator which is easily workable, has a small device length and does not consume electric power by providing a total reflecting part having a multiple quantum well structure and connecting a total reflecting part and resistor in parallel with a photocurrent generating source. CONSTITUTION:Incident light 16 to be controlled on a branching optical waveguide 5 is made incident partly on the photocurrent generating source consisting of a light absorbing section 6 by the branching optical waveguide 5 and partly on the total reflecting part 7. The electrons of the photocarriers generated by light absorption in the photocurrent generating source flow into a p region and the holes into an n region by the diffusion potential. Then, a current flows to a closed loop circuit contg. the photocurrent generating source and the resistor 15 and a potential difference arises at both ends of the resistor 15. This potential difference is made into the electric field to be impressed to the multiple quantum well layer of the total reflecting part 7 and the mode separator makes self-operation.
