PURPOSE: To detect the speed and direction of an automobile on the ground sensitively by arranging first and second ground speed sensors in different directions. CONSTITUTION: The position and attitude of an automobile 1 are defined sufficiently by two arbitrary positions P, Q. With respect to a geometrical coordinate system (x, y) fixed on the ground, these two points are represented by P(x1 , y1 ) and Q(x2 , y2 ). When the distance R between these two points is kept constant regardless of the movement, equation I is obtained. The point P may be the front center of the automobile and the point Q may be the rear center thereof. Consequently, the angleθdefined by a line connecting the two points P, Q and the yaxis of the geometrical coordinate system represents the direction of the automobile with respect to the y-axis. The point P can be selected in the left rearward direction of the automobile while the point Q can be selected in the right rearward direction thereof using the distance R and the directionθof the automobile. In this regard, the angleθrepresents the direction of the automobile with respect to xaxis.
