The method applies to the preparation of a lithiated manganese oxide based active cathode material for rechargeable lithium cells for use in electronic equipment, radio receivers, calculators, cameras, flashes etc. The electrode obtained by this method features improved electrochemical characteristics. The lithiated manganese oxide is obtained from a mixture of manganese carbonate and lithium nitrate taken at a ratio of 70:30 to 80:20 by a three-stage thermal treatment: at 300-310 degrees C for 4-6 hours while purging with oxygen or air, at 330-350 degrees C for 4-8 hours while purging again, and at 370-400 degrees C for 14-16 hours without purging. An option involves pre-decomposing the manganese carbonate to gamma; beta; manganese oxide by heating to 330-360 degree C for 8-12 hours, purging included, followed by mixing the latter with lithium nitrate at a ratio of 3:1 to 3:1.2 and heating the mixture up to 330-350 degrees C for 4-6 hours while purging, and once again to 370-380 degrees C for 14-16 hours without purging. |
